One of the proudest moments for any parent is watching their child graduate. But bringing them to the UK for the ceremony requires careful planning. A simple “Tourist Visa” application often fails without the right Sponsorship Documents from the student.
Here is the 2026 guide to bringing your family to the UK legally and safely.
1. The Visa Category: Standard Visitor (Family)
Your parents will apply for the Standard Visitor Visa.
Duration: 6 Months (Multi-entry).
Fees (2026): £127 per person (approx. ₹16,500).
Processing Time: 15 Working Days (3 Weeks).
2. The Student’s Role: The “Sponsorship Packet”
Since you (the student) are inviting them, you must provide the core evidence. You must send these documents to your parents:
1. Invitation Letter: A personal letter stating: “I am inviting my parents for my graduation on [Date]. They will stay with me at [Address].”
2. University Graduation Letter: Official letter from the university confirming the ceremony date and your eligibility to attend.
3. Proof of Accommodation:
If they stay with you: Your Tenancy Agreement + Council Tax Bill (to prove you legally live there and have space).
Warning: If you live in a tiny studio, you cannot invite 4 family members. Book a hotel instead
Financial Support (Optional): If you are paying for their trip, attach your UK Bank Statements (3 months). However, it is usually better if parents show their own funds in India.
My parents are retired. Will the visa officer think they won’t come back?
This is a valid fear. The UKVI (Home Office) often rejects retired parents because they don’t have a job to return to. They assume the parents will overstay and live with their children permanently. The Solution: You must prove “Social and Economic Ties” using Property and Family Obligations, not just a job letter.
3. The Parents’ Role: Proving “Ties to India”
This is where the visa is won or lost. Since they might be retired, they must show they must return to India.
Financial Ties:
Pension Book/Slips: Proof of monthly pension income.
Fixed Deposits (FDs): Show savings that mature in the future.
Agricultural Income: J-Forms or bank receipts from crop sales.
Social Ties:
Property Deeds: Proof of house/land ownership (Fards).
Family: Photos/details of other children or grandchildren living in India who rely on them.
Medical: If they have ongoing medical treatment in India, attach a doctor’s letter.
4. The “Length of Stay” Mistake
The Mistake: Applying for a 6-month stay just for a 1-day graduation ceremony.
The Refusal: The officer will ask: “Why do you need 6 months for a 2-hour event?”
The Fix: Apply for a reasonable period (e.g., 3 to 4 weeks).
Tip: Once the visa is approved for 6 months, they can stay longer, but the initial application should match the event.
5. What if the Student is Working (PSW/Graduate Route)?
If you have finished your studies and are now on a Post-Study Work (PSW) visa, the rules are slightly different.
You must attach your Employment Contract and Payslips.
This shows you are financially stable enough to host them.
