Australia Student Visa 2026: The OSHC Duration Trap & Medical Checks

Before you fly to Sydney or Melbourne, the Australian Government demands two absolute health guarantees: that you do not carry infectious diseases, and that you will not drain their Medicare system if you get sick.

Here is the 2026 expert guide to navigating Australia’s strict medical exams and OSHC requirements.

1. The Mandatory Medical Exam (eMedical)

If you are applying from India, you cannot use your local family doctor.

  • The Process: Once you lodge your visa (or right before, using the “Upfront Medical” process), you generate a HAP ID. You must use this ID to book an appointment with a DHA-approved Panel Physician.

  • What They Test: The exam includes a general physical, a urine test, and most importantly, a Chest X-Ray to screen for Tuberculosis (TB).

  • The Delay Risk: If your X-ray shows scarring (even from a childhood infection you forgot about), your file will be sent to the Global Health unit in Australia. You may be forced to undergo 8 weeks of sputum testing, delaying your visa massively.

  • Expert Tip: Do not hide past medical conditions. The Panel Physicians will find out, and lying results in a fraud ban.

2. What is OSHC? (Overseas Student Health Cover)

You cannot enter Australia without OSHC. It covers your doctor visits, ambulance rides, and limited hospital treatments.

  • Approved Providers Only: You cannot buy cheap travel insurance. You must buy an official OSHC policy from one of the six government-approved providers: Allianz, Bupa, Medibank, NIB, CBHS, or ahm.

  • How to Buy: You can buy it through your university (they usually partner with one provider) or you can buy it yourself through a broker to find a cheaper rate.

“My Master’s degree is exactly 24 months long. So I just bought 24 months of health insurance online. Is my file ready?” No. Your visa will be delayed or refused.

  • The Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA) does not grant visas for the exact length of your course. They grant it for your course plus a buffer period (usually 1 to 3 months). If your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is even one day short of your proposed visa expiry date, your application is invalid.

3. The “OSHC Math” (How to Avoid Refusals)

This is where 90% of DIY applicants fail. Your OSHC must cover you from the day you arrive in Australia until the day your visa officially expires.

  • The DHA Rules for Visa Expiry:

    • If your course is less than 10 months: Visa is granted for Course Length + 1 month.

    • If your course is over 10 months (finishing Jan-Oct): Visa is granted for Course Length + 2 months.

    • If your course is over 10 months (finishing Nov-Dec): Visa is granted until March 15th of the following year.

  • The Rule: You must purchase your OSHC to cover this entire buffer period.

4. The “Couple & Family” OSHC Shock

If you are planning to bring your spouse or children on your Subclass 500 visa as dependents, brace yourself for the financial impact.

  • The Cost Jump: A Single OSHC policy might cost AUD $1,500 for a 2-year Master’s degree. However, upgrading to a “Couple OSHC” doesn’t just double the price—it skyrockets. A Couple policy can cost AUD $7,000 to $9,000 for the exact same duration. A Family policy is even higher.

  • The Proof of Funds: When you show your bank statements to the Embassy, you must prove you have the funds to cover this massive insurance cost upfront, in addition to the AUD 29,710 living costs.
