The UK Student Visa (formerly Tier 4) is the final hurdle between you and your British degree. In 2026, the process has become fully digital, but the scrutiny on Indian students is higher than ever.
Here is your step-by-step guide to applying correctly and avoiding the “Refusal Trap.”
Step 1: Check Your CAS Letter (Crucial!)
You cannot apply without a CAS. This is a digital reference number sent by your university. Before you apply, check:
Your Name: Does it match your passport exactly? (e.g., “Gurnam Singh” vs “Gurnam Singh S/O Baldev”).
Tuition Fees: Does it state the correct fees and the amount you have already paid?
English Level: Does it say “Higher Education Institution (HEI) assessment” (No IELTS) or “SELT required”?
Mistake: If there is an error, do not apply. Ask the university to update the “Sponsor Note” first.
Step 2: Prepare Your Finances (The 28-Day Rule)
You must have the required funds (Tuition + Living Expenses) in your account for 28 days before you submit the online form.
-
London: £1,334 per month.
-
Outside London: £1,023 per month.

Step 3: Fill the Online Application (GOV.UK)
Go to the official GOV.UK website.
-
Tip: Have your travel history ready. You must declare all international trips from the last 10 years.
-
The “Refusal” Question: You will be asked: “Have you ever been refused a visa for any country?”
-
If you were refused a Tourist Visa for Canada 4 years ago, SAY YES.
-
If you hide it, the UK (which shares data with Canada) will ban you for 10 years for deception.
-
I have my CAS. Can I apply for the visa now?
Yes, but be careful. Receiving your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is only 50% of the battle. The actual visa application is a legal process where a single typo—like misspelling your name or entering the wrong CAS number—can lead to an instant refusal.
Step 4: Pay the Fees (2026 Rates)
You will need an international debit/credit card with a high limit.
1.Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £776 per year.
Note: If your course is 1 year + 4 months wrap-up time, you will likely pay for 1.5 years (£1,164).
2. Visa Application Fee: £524 (Standard Service).
- Priority Service (5 Days): Approx. £500 extra.
- Super Priority (24 Hours): Approx. £1,000 extra.
Step 5: Book Biometrics & Upload Documents
You will be redirected to the VFS Global website.
-
Book Appointment: Choose a center (Jalandhar, Chandigarh, New Delhi, etc.). Remember, Jalandhar is a “Premium” center with an extra fee.
-
Self-Upload: Scan and upload your Passport, CAS, Financial Docs, and TB Certificate before the appointment to save money.
Step 6: The Interview (The Wildcard)
After submitting biometrics, you might get an email saying: “We want to interview you.” This is a Credibility Interview.
-
They will ask about your modules, your university’s location, and why you aren’t studying in India.
-
Expert Tip: If you fail to answer, your visa is refused regardless of your finances.
