USA Student Packing List: What to Buy Before Leaving India

Your USA student packing list starts with one power rule

The USA runs on 120V power with Type A and Type B plugs. India uses 230V. That means most Indian appliances, like kettles, irons, hair dryers and mixer grinders, won’t work safely in the USA, even with a plug adapter.

Phone and laptop chargers are the exception. Most support 100-240V, so they only need a plug adapter. Check for “100-240V” on the label before you pack any device.

This USA student packing list focuses on what’s worth buying in India before you fly: items that are USB-powered, dual-voltage, or need no power at all. For general basics like luggage, winter wear and an adapter, see our 25 things to buy before you fly. For room setup, see our first month abroad checklist.

Documents to carry to the USA

A US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer may ask to see these at the airport, so keep them in your cabin bag, never in checked luggage.

  • Passport, valid for your planned stay
  • F-1 visa in your passport
  • Form I-20, signed by you and your school’s Designated School Official (DSO)
  • SEVIS I-901 fee payment receipt
  • University admission letter
  • Proof of funds: the financial documents used for your I-20 and visa
  • Academic transcripts and degree certificates
  • Test score reports (GRE, GMAT, SAT, TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo, as applicable)
  • Housing details: your dorm or apartment address
  • Vaccination records, as most US universities require proof of immunisation
  • Prescriptions for any medicines you carry, with the generic names

Key rules:

  • As a new F-1 student, you can enter the USA no more than 30 days before the programme start date on your I-20.
  • After you arrive, download your I-94 record from the CBP website and check the details are correct.
  • If you carry more than USD 10,000 in cash or monetary instruments, you must declare it to CBP.
  • Report to your university’s international student office when you arrive, so your SEVIS record is activated.

Dorm room

Undergraduates often start in a campus dorm, while many graduate students share an off-campus apartment. Either way, you’ll likely have a roommate.

1. USB white noise machine

A roommate on a different schedule, hallway noise and late-night traffic can ruin your sleep. A small white noise machine masks background sounds. Choose a USB-powered one so the 120V supply isn’t an issue.

2. Rechargeable handheld vacuum

Dorm rooms and shared apartments get dusty fast, and a full-size vacuum isn’t always available. A cordless, USB-rechargeable mini vacuum handles floors, desks and keyboards.

Dorm kitchen

Many US dorms don’t allow hot plates or open-coil appliances in rooms, but do allow a microwave. Check your housing rules, then pack non-electric and microwave-friendly gear.

3. Microwave cooking set

A microwave rice cooker, pasta cooker and egg cooker let you make real meals without a stove. They’re light and easy to pack. Look for sets marked BPA-free.

4. Manual can opener

Beans, chickpeas, tomatoes and soups in US supermarkets often come in cans. Not every can has a ring-pull, and a basic opener is easy to forget.

5. French press

Coffee is a big part of US campus life, and café coffee adds up fast. A French press makes good coffee or tea with just hot water, and needs no electricity.

6. USB-rechargeable electric toothbrush

Some electric toothbrushes come with a charging base rated only for 220-240V. A model that charges by USB works anywhere, including on your laptop or a US phone charger.

7. Dual-voltage hair straightener

A 230V-only straightener can be damaged or become unsafe on US power. A dual-voltage model (100-240V) works in both countries. Check the label says 100-240V before you buy.

8. Car phone mount

Outside big cities, public transport in many US college towns is limited. Many students share rides with friends or buy a used car. A vent or dashboard phone mount keeps navigation hands-free, and many US states restrict holding a phone while driving.

9. Formal blazer for career fairs

US universities hold career fairs every semester, and business formal is the usual dress code for them and for interviews. A well-fitted blazer is far cheaper in India, and you can get it tailored before you fly.

10. One festive ethnic outfit

Indian student associations on many US campuses celebrate Diwali, Holi and Navratri. Ethnic wear costs more in the USA and can be hard to find outside big cities, so carry at least one festive outfit.

    Sports and downtime

    11. Tennis-ball cricket bat

Weekend cricket is how many Indian students make friends in the USA. Cricket gear is harder to find and costs more there, while a light tennis-ball bat is cheap in India. A full-size bat is longer than most suitcases, so check your airline’s sports equipment rules or choose a shorter size that fits.

    12. Badminton racket

Many US universities have indoor courts at the campus recreation centre, and badminton clubs are popular with international students. Good rackets usually cost less in India.

What not to pack for the USA

    • 230V-only appliances. Indian kettles, irons, mixer grinders, hair dryers and heaters won’t work safely on 120V. Buy these in the USA.
    • Meat products. Meat, and foods containing meat, from India are generally not allowed into the USA.
    • Undeclared food. You must declare all food and agricultural items on your US customs declaration. Many packaged items like spices and snacks are allowed after inspection, but undeclared items can lead to fines.
    • Winter gear for the wrong state. Winters in Boston or Chicago are very different from Texas or California. Check your city’s climate before you pack heavy clothes.
